Food manufacturer announced as winner of £30k Shower Hub.
Celebrating National Cycle to Work Day (4 September 2014), food manufacturer Kavli UK, has been announced as the winner of a Clearspace Shower Hub, a standalone shower and changing unit worth £30,000, in a national competition.
The competition was organised by modular construction company Clearspace Buildings in conjunction with CycleScheme.co.uk, the UK’s leading tax-free cycle to work programme. It was open to all companies across the UK with eight or more employees.
Based in Gateshead in the north east, Kavli UK employs 150 people and believes the Shower Hub will now encourage 20% of their workforce to take up cycling to work, more than double the current amount that commute by bike each day.
Kavli UK was selected from more than 750 organisations to win the Clearspace Shower Hub. The judges, which included former Olympic cyclist and commentator Rob Hayles, were impressed with Kavli’s commitment to cycling in the workplace.
Kavli actively encourages its workforce to cycle to work, recognising the health benefits of cycling as a vehicle to reduce absenteeism, inspire happier and healthier staff and help the company achieve ‘Gold Level’ in the national recognised Better Health at Work Scheme.
Paul Lewney, Managing Director of Kavli uk said: "We are absolutely delighted to win the Shower Hub. It will become an intrinsic part of our ongoing commitment to a healthier workforce. I look forward to seeing our cyclists using this amazing facility at Kavli."
The prize – a two unit Shower Hub, comprises separate shower and change facilities, takes up only two car parking spaces and can be installed and connected to power and water in less than a day. As part of the prize, Clearspace Buildings will deliver and install the double unit in Kavli UK’s car park later this year.
Scott Horner, Managing Director of Clearspace Buildings, said: “We’re excited to be giving away a Shower Hub to Kavli UK, a company that shows a real commitment to their sustainable transport programme and the welfare of their employees. It was exciting to see that they had set targets to increase cycling in the workforce and had existing cycle storage and locker facilities which, through the addition of a Shower Hub, would enable them to double the amount of people who will cycle to work.”
Laurence Boon, Marketing Manager at Cyclescheme.co.uk, said “We were over the moon to support Clearspace with their phenomenal competition to win a Shower Hub and delighted that the judging team agreed on such a worthy recipient for the unit. Kavli demonstrated commitment, vision and passion in their submission and we believe those qualities will translate into more of their colleagues cycling once the unit is installed. Cyclescheme hope to work closely with Clearspace and Kavli over the next 12 months to see how facilities aid participation”.
Billed as a ‘sustainable transport solution’, the first Shower Hub was unveiled by ambassador Rob Hayles earlier this year at Watford Hospital. He said: “I love the Shower Hub. I love the ethos; the fact that it is modular means it can be squeezed into tight spaces that are hard to come by at a lot of facilities. “The Shower Hub is an excellent resource for cyclists. I’m passionate about cycling, professionally and personally, and if the introduction of facilities like this encourages more people to leave their cars at home and take up cycling, that’s excellent news for everyone.”
