Cycleguard helping you get ready for winter

It’s that time of year again - it’s getting colder, wetter, and windier and your morning and evening commute are soon to be all in the hours of darkness. All of which can make for hazardous commuting conditions.

With that in mind it’s important to make sure that you and your bike have the right kit and protection to help get you through the winter - and safely!

Take a look at our 3 steps below, to see if you’re ready to take on winter.

 1.     Is your bike ready?

Whether you’re cycling poorly lit country roads or under streetlights from home to office, bike lights are not just essential, but the law. So you’ll need to invest in a set of front and rear lights, as well as having a rear reflector fitted to your bike so you’re visible in the dark.

It’s also worth having a good set of tyres and pedals with decent grip (with reflectors!) as both will help in the slippery winter conditions.

Winter can be tough on your bike, so  as well as making sure it’s geared up to take on the change in conditions, it’s worth taking it to your local bike shop for a service, just to keep everything running smoothly.

 2.     Are you ready?

As well as your bike being ready for the change in conditions, you need to be as well. Wearing high visibility reflective clothing or using a high-vis belt or rucksack cover can all help towards making sure you’re seen during your commute and visible to other road users.

 3.     Insurance?

We know having to purchase extra kit to make sure you’re prepared is costly. That’s why it’s important to make sure you have adequate insurance cover, for you and your bike. Cycleguard are Cyclescheme’s preferred insurance partner and have been working together for the last 8 years to make sure that cyclists have the protection they need to keep cycling.

At Cycleguard we provide specialist cover, with features that many home insurance policies don’t include - providing cover against theft and accidental damage as standard, along with the option to include cover for accessories. That means those extra winter cycling accessories, lights, jackets, gloves, base layers, can all be protected against theft and accidental damage.

Road conditions are notoriously more treacherous in winter, which can increase the likelihood of accidents happening. With Cycleguard you can include public liability cover to your policy, protecting you against 3rd party claims. So if a slippery or icy road means you accidentally ride into someone or their property, you’re protected.

We also provide the option for ‘Cycle Rescue’, so if the adverse weather conditions do get the better of you and you’re unable to continue a journey due to bike damage, breakdown or even theft, we can pick you up and get you home*. What’s more, whist you wait for your bike to be repaired or replaced we can offer bike hire (subject to an approved claim), so that you don’t have to be left without a way to get to work.

We want to make sure that you can continue commuting, regardless of the weather, but more importantly you can continue to maintain your savings by avoiding hefty replacement costs, in the event of theft or damage, and enjoy the full tax exemption for your hire period.

Cycleguard will support you and your bike throughout your Cyclescheme agreement and beyond – so don’t leave it until it’s too late.
