Cyclescheme is the UK's most popular cycle to work benefit, creating more cyclists than any other provider.

Brand-new Cyclescheme partner, BIKE-DROP, introduce their unique offering and give us their top tips for making your cycle to work a doddle.

For many Londoners the thought of returning to work, and specifically ‘how are we going to get there’ seems a little bit daunting at the moment.  Whilst we are undoubtedly craving a return to normal, the thought of rush hour on a packed tube or bus feels rather uneasy in these times after social distancing. Things are pointing to a shift in behaviour towards alternative modes of transport, and a significant move towards active travel.

It has been positive to see local authorities not only encouraging but enabling people to cycle by investing in cycle lanes and infrastructure. There is of course much more to be done, but it is good to see steps being taken to make commuter cyclists safer and more comfortable.

The last DfT National Attitudes survey showed:

  • People feel safest from COVID-19 when travelling by bike
  • 34% are cycling more than before
  • 95% say they will cycle more after the pandemic
  • 65% say they’re unlikely to use public transport when it’s busy

This is just more data to demonstrate the surge in active travel and the need for even more support for cycling infrastructure, especially for those wanting to cycle to work.

However there still remains a very much overlooked part of the puzzle which is where to park your bike safely and securely.  There has been a much-publicised increase in cycling with sales booming, stock sold out and long waiting lists, but where to park your pride and joy is still a barrier to cycling for many people.  With restrictions on cycle to work schemes being lifted your bike is potentially a really expensive bit of kit! This is where BIKE-DROP can support you providing safe, secure and convenient bike parking in London’s West End.  We like the personal touch, so our CREW will be delighted to take care of your bike, looking after it until your return.  BIKE-DROP is the only parking service that gives you that real peace of mind, during the working day, that your bike will be there on your return.

Cycling to work makes the journey to and from work more fun and gives you a great sense of achieving something even before you start your working day. It improves your health and wellbeing, plus there are the benefits to the environment and the reduction of your carbon footprint. Sneaking the health benefits of cycling into your daily commute is so easy it almost feels like cheating! You feel happier, boost your mood and get a sense of achievement leaving you ready to tackle your day.

So, whether you are new to cycling or a pro, here are our top tips ...

What type of bike?
Biking to work is fun, plain and simple, and quite honestly any bike will do… but do make sure it is in good working order.  If you want to try a longer distance, e-bikes are a great low cost, energy efficient option, adding a little oomph to your ride whilst eliminating the possibility of sweating.

Riding an e-bike isn’t ‘cheating’, you still have to pedal and you still burn calories, however it does make a bike commute more accessible as you can travel further.  At BIKE-DROP we have a fab selection of the coolest, foldable e-bike - the MATE bike, why not take a look and see, there is a MATE for everyone ….

How to carry your stuff?
Invest in a comfortable backpack, especially if you are carrying a laptop or other heavy items.  If the weight is too much, then you can accessorise with a pannier to do the heavy lifting for you.

Check your route
One of the joys of cycling to work is to see the City from a different perspective and find new roads, paths and parks in your community.  We recommend using a route planner such as TFL.

Cycling - Transport for London

Using the route planner will let you know the length of your ride beforehand in order to eliminate the stress of making it on time come Monday morning. Sticking to bike lanes whenever possible will make cycling to work all the more enjoyable, but don’t be afraid to try new routes, it’s fun to explore and mix up your daily routine.

What to wear?
For daylight commuting, wear bright colours that can easily be seen by motorists, and if cycling into the evening then we would suggest reflective gear to make yourself as visible to motorists as possible. We recommend that you always wear a helmet!

We’d also suggest a quick weather check before you leave the house, as the Great British weather can certainly be unpredictable.

Where to park?
Well... We’re glad you’ve asked and here we are!

Our easy booking QR system can be done via our website and our CREW will be delighted to meet you at our DROPs to park your bike and give you the peace of mind that it will be there on your return.
