Getting more women cycling

We're working hard to encourage more women to cycle to work

Over the last 4 years’ Team GB has enjoyed incredible success at both the Olympic and Paralympic games and female cyclists have garnered an astonishing number of medals, claimed countless titles and have raised the profile of women in sport exponentially. Cyclescheme’s ambassador, Dame Sarah Storey, has herself won 6 Gold Paralympic medals in cycling and has proved to be an incredible source of inspiration for cyclists (and non-cyclists) everywhere.

Despite success at an elite level, it’s an unfortunate fact that fewer women than men choose to cycle. We are working very hard to break down barriers that prevent people from cycling, and specifically, cycling to work which is why this month we are focussing on female cyclists.

Through this edition of the Cyclescheme newsletter we hope to highlight the joys of commuting to work by bike, but also realistically address concerns that many people (not just women) have about taking to two-wheels.

Check out our kit round up on alternatives to lycra, bikes for women and some great tips and tricks on how to look businesslike after biking. Plus there’s some great information on British Cycling’s women-only Breeze initiative, an interview with real life Cycleschemer, Carolyn and much more!

We need your help

Our mission with Dame Sarah Storey is to encourage more people to cycle to work. Part of this involves reaching out to people who haven’t considered cycling before and giving them all the information, advice and support they need to get started.

Only 25% of Cyclescheme participants are female, so why not inspire those in your life to ditch the car, tear up the bus pass and join the cycling revolution! Why not forward them a copy of this months’ newsletter, share this article or just encourage someone to get out on a bike and give it a go?

We all need a little encouragement sometimes and, whilst the sun is beaming down on us, what better time to embrace a two-wheeled commute?
