Cyclescheme is the UK's most popular cycle to work benefit, creating more cyclists than any other provider.

Cyclescheme 7: Charlotte

Cyclescheme 7: Charlotte

Ever wondered how your commuting experience differs to others? Each month we share the story of a real Cyclescheme cycle commuter and ask them questions to sum up their experience from their two-wheeled commute. This month, it's Charlotte.

Each month we feature one Cyclescheme participant and share their commuting story. From John O'Groats to Lands End, we scour the country for the real cycle commuters who take to their bike each morning. If you'd like to feature on our website, just drop us a line on: socialmedia@cyclescheme.co.uk with "I'm in' in the subject line.

This month we caught up with Charlotte to see how her commute has changed her life.

Where in the UK are you?

Edinburgh, Scotland.

What was your main motivation for getting a bike through Cyclescheme?

I wanted to get fitter, and saw commuting by bike as a good way to do this. I'd recently moved from London to Edinburgh and my old bike simply couldn't hack the hills! I also wanted a bike which I could use for longer distance leisure rides at the weekends, and Cyclescheme gave me a way of spreading the cost of the bike and some accessories for it.

What bike did you get and why?

Roux Etape 150. I chatted with my local bike shop, who recommended I get a touring bike as I was nervous of going 'full-road'. I love it, but I've definitely got the bug and as I've now paid off my Roux I'm considering getting a proper road bike for my weekend jaunts via the Cyclescheme.

How much did you spend on your Cyclescheme request?

I spent £450.

How often do you commute to work by bike?

3-4 times per week.

Where do you commute formand to?

Edinburgh to Stirling (bike and train- I cycle to and from each station).

How has cycling affected your daily life - do you feel healthier? Have you saved money?

I feel so much fitter, and I arrive at work energised and much less stressed than I used to be. Cycling is much quicker and cheaper than making the equivalent journey by bus- I save about £100 per month through cycling. I have also really upped my social cycling. I'm a member of several social cycling groups in Edinburgh and I'm loving getting to know a different side to the city and local area. Cycling has even impacted on my holidays. I took my bike up to Orkney last summer and had an amazing time. I'll also be signing up for my first sportive this summer!
